Healthy mum, healthy baby
Carrying a baby is a big responsibility. What happens during pregnancy will have an impact on the baby’s future.
During pregnancy, there are little ways you can help give your baby the best start to life.
- have no drugs or alcohol as these can damage baby’s brain
- only have a little bit of caffeine (about a cup per day)
- avoid over-the-counter and prescription medication
- have good nutrition to shape baby’s healthy brain development
- ask your doctor or health care professional about folic acid (this is a tablet you can take to help make sure your baby’s brain, skull and spinal cord develop)
- talk to your doctor or health care professional about eating a nutritious diet
- include foods with vitamin D, iron and calcium in your diet (foods like cooked eggs and meat, milk, yoghurt, leafy green vegetables, wholegrain breads and cereals, nuts and seeds) – these help keep baby and mum strong
- have more fresh food and good fats (good fats are found in high-fat foods that are healthy like avocados, nuts, eggs, full-fat yoghurt and fish oil supplements)
- eat protein and carbohydrates to meet big energy needs of mum and baby (foods like meat, fruits, vegetables and oats)
- have between 1250-3350 extra kilojoules each day (for example, add a small tub of yoghurt and an extra piece of fruit to your diet each day)
- try to keep calm because mum’s stress hormones slip through the placenta and enter baby’s brain
- do regular safe exercise – keeps body and mind healthy
- sing and talk to baby even before they are born, so they know the voices of their mob.
