Remote Kindergarten Pilot Program
A new option for providing kindergarten is being piloted in remote Queensland communities.
As part of the 2016 Remote Kindergarten Pilot, 11 select state schools are delivering an approved kindergarten program in a composite class with Prep and other primary school children.
The kindergarten program is being delivered for 15 hours each week during the school terms by each school’s teacher, with additional teacher aide support. Thanks to the pilot, children are enjoying learning experiences and face-to-face interactions with their teacher, as well as social interaction with other children.
To participate in the pilot, children needed to be kindergarten-age and meet the eKindy eligibility criteria, including living at least 16km from the nearest centre based early childhood education and care service catering to kindergarten age children.
The 2016 Remote Kindergarten Pilot complements the distance education program, eKindy which continues to enable isolated children to participate in kindy. The pilot is being assessed to determine if the program will continue beyond 2016.
