A place to make friends

Early Years Places are an easy way for families to access a range of early childhood activities, child and maternal health services and family support all in one location.

Allison has been visiting the Early Years Place in Cairns with her children and said she enjoyed being social with other adults, as well as engaging with her children.

‘I’m really shy and not confident with other mums or peers like teachers, so it sort of gave me a boost to come every day and get my confidence with other mums,’ Allison said.

‘My favourite part is the interaction between myself and my daughter and my son.

‘Usually when I am with my son, I have that support from the teacher with my daughter, so I can have that one-on-one.

‘It’s a very close relationship here with all the staff and other mums.

‘I feel they are very supportive of what I do and especially support me with my children’s development.

‘They have helped get my three year old ready for kindergarten next year, which is a major thing for me.

‘I know for myself, from my experience when I first started, they accepted me with open arms.

‘We’re sort of like one big family,’ she said.
