Transitions to school start at home
Making a successful transition to school helps your child with future learning and work opportunities.
At home you support your child’s transition to school. Interactions with adults and children, talking, reading and playing with your child are all ways they learn. This helps them to get school-ready.
In addition, you can talk to your child about going to school. Show that you are proud of them. Share positive experiences from when you went to school; this can make the process seem more routine.
Practice new routines
Make it a fun activity for your child to try out some routines before their first day.
- Check that everything fits as they try on their uniform.
- Go for a lunchbox picnic to practice having a backpack and packed lunch.
- Make a map from home to school.
- Make a chatterbox with ideas to get ready for school.
Get to know your child’s teacher. Let your child know that they can talk to their teacher, and ask them for help if they need it.
Take it easy
Picking your child up on time from school or an after-hours care service can help them feel secure in their new routine.
Your child may be tired after school for the first few weeks. During the day they are busy learning and working out their new school. If possible, limit after school activities for the first few weeks, or even months, while your child to adjusts to the big changes.
Your child might be hungry after school, so it’s a good idea to have a healthy snack ready for when they get home. This can also be a good time for you to sit with them and talk about their day.
